We are asking you to be in a research study. The purpose of this introductory page is to give you the information you will need to help you decide whether to be in the study or not. Please read this page carefully. If this page does not answer your questions about the purpose of the research, what we are asking you to do, the possible risks and benefits, your rights as a volunteer, or anything else about the research, you may choose to email or call us with questions. You can also contact us to decline participation in the study (This process is called “informed consent”).
DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH
You are invited to participate in a research study about how social media use can influence personal and relationship well-being. You have been asked to participate because you use Facebook regularly. This research will be conducted over the internet using an online survey tool.
WHAT WILL MY PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?
To participate in the current study you be 18 years of age or older. If you decide to participate in this research, you will be asked to complete a brief online anonymous survey. The survey will detail your habits and and attitudes regarding your use of Facebook, as well as various questions about you personal well-being or romantic relationships. Most people can complete this survey in approximately 15 minutes.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS TO ME?
The survey is anonymous and therefore has no risk of breach of confidentiality. Risks to taking this survey include having an emotional reaction to some of the questions or answers. If your participation causes you to become upset, you may skip any questions that you do not want to answer, and you may quit the survey at any time.
ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS TO ME?
There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this study. However, if you are an Edgewood College Student you may be eligible for course credit. If your Professor is offering extra credit or if you are interested in being entered in a drawing, at the end of the survey you will have the option to be redirected to a separate survey. This separate survey is where you will enter information relevant to course credit or drawing entry. By collecting this information on an external survey, we can ensure that no identifying information will be linked to your responses on the research survey.
HOW WILL MY CONFIDENTIALITY BE PROTECTED?
This study is anonymous. Neither your name nor any other identifiable information will be recorded on the survey website.
